World Environment Day (WED) 2025 - Fuyoh! Let’s Step Up 3KM Fun Walk
Every year, the Penang Green Council (PGC) celebrates World Environment Day (WED) as a reminder to all levels of society of the need to live sustainably and in harmony with the environment through their daily activities.
Once again hosted by the Republic of Korea, World Environment Day 2025 in Jeju Island will focus on raising awareness of plastic pollution and uniting all sectors (government, businesses, and civil society) in addressing this critical issue under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution”, which is aligned with Penang’s objectives.
The event began with a Zumba session and was followed by the flag-off of participants by YB Dato’ Seri Sundarajoo Somu, EXCO for Housing and Environment.
The open participation attracted people from various walks of life, demonstrating support for healthy and sustainable lifestyles.
Participants were encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles and bags as a symbolic gesture of reducing single-use plastic consumption at public events.
This programme formed part of the ongoing initiative to cultivate a culture of sustainability among the people of Penang.

Call To Action’ Social Media Activities – Interesting Facts & ‘Call to Action’
This initiative is a strategic effort aimed at encouraging Penang residents to take immediate action and corrective measures towards reducing single-use plastic consumption, in line with the objectives of the No Single-Use Plastic (NSUP) campaign.
PGC delivered the NSUP message through the creation of interactive social media content, including a carousel post series highlighting plastic pollution issues as well as the challenges of the Pulau Burung landfill, which is projected to reach its maximum capacity by 2035.
To enhance reach and effectiveness, these posts were further strengthened through paid promotions (ads boost) to expand their visibility among target audiences.
The posts were published biweekly, on 19 July 2025 and 2 August 2025, focusing on delivering interesting facts, raising awareness of the current situation, and encouraging action through calls such as bringing your own bags, avoiding single-use plastics, and supporting the state’s green policies.
Collaboration with Strategic Partner (Penang Hill Festival)
As a supporting partner of the Penang Hill Festival 2025, the Penang Green Council (PGC) conducted a roadshow on 20 July 2025 as part of the festival’s programme.
The roadshow delivered the #PilihlahReusable campaign message and supported local authorities’ initiatives to reduce single-use plastic consumption through educational and engagement approaches with visitors.
The main activity was a silkscreen printing session on recycled bags (2nd-life bags) featuring a special No Single-Use Plastic (NSUP) design, serving as an interactive medium to encourage visitors to practise reuse in their daily lives.

Distribution of Free NSUP Cloth Bags
On 18 July 2025, the Penang Green Council (PGC) distributed 200 NSUP bags to the offices of the Penang State Government EXCO members, immediately after the EXCO meeting at KOMTAR, as a symbol of support for the state administration’s single-use plastic reduction policy.
The programme continued with public distribution at key locations as follows:

Chai Leng Park Wet Market, Perai

Earth Fest 2025: Where Creativity Inspires Climate Action
3 – 5 October 2025 | 🕘 10.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m. | 📍 Hin Bus Depot
Earth Fest 2025 celebrated sustainability through a creative and educational approach that connected art, knowledge, and community participation. Held at Hin Bus Depot, the event invited the public to explore environmental awareness in an engaging, hands-on way.
A key highlight of the festival was the art installation, designed to simplify complex environmental issues into relatable visual stories. The installation demonstrated how creativity can make sustainability both accessible and memorable for all ages.
Complementing the display was an interactive sustainability quiz, which encouraged visitors to test their environmental knowledge. Participants who completed the quiz received upcycled gifts, turning learning into an enjoyable and meaningful experience while reinforcing the importance of reusability and waste reduction.
The event successfully bridged on-site engagement and digital outreach. On-site activities drew strong participation and conversations among visitors, while the event’s digital promotion extended its impact beyond the venue.
These outcomes reflect how the combination of creative education and interactive engagement effectively strengthened public understanding of sustainability and built a deeper connection with Penang Green Council’s mission.
Earth Fest 2025 proved that meaningful change begins with awareness. This also reminds us that creativity remains one of the most powerful tools to inspire environmental action.
