Penang Green Council’s (PGC) ReBag Station initiative wasfeatured by CGTN, recognising the community-driven effort toreduce waste and encourage reusable practices in Penang.

The feature highlighted the simple sharing concept of donating,taking, and reusing reusable bags through ReBag Stations locatedacross Penang, including Gurney Plaza, Design Village Outlet Mall,and GAMA.

This international recognition reflects the growing public supportfor sustainable living and Penang’s commitment towards reducingsingle-use plastic waste through community participation.

 

Promoting Reusable Habits at Prangin Mall Ramadan Bazaar

In conjunction with the Ramadan bazaar season, PGC conductedan NSUP bag giveaway at the bustling Prangin Mall RamadanBazaar to encourage reusable shopping practices amongbazaarvisitors.​

Ramadan bazaars often generate significant amounts of plasticpackaging and disposable waste due to high food and beveragepurchases. Through this initiative, PGC aimed to inspire visitors tocarry reusable bags while shopping for festive meals and dailynecessities.​

The outreach programme also served as an opportunity toengage directly with the public on the importance of reducingplastic waste during festive periods, reinforcing Penang’scollective effort towards building a greener and cleaner future.​

NSUP Awareness at Masi Maga Theppa Thiruvizha

2 March 2026 | 📍Sri Singamuga Kaliamman Temple, Teluk Bahang

PGC extended the NSUP campaign outreach to the Masi MagaTheppa Thiruvizha celebration at Sri Singamuga KaliammanTemple in Teluk Bahang, engaging with devotees and visitorsgathered for the cultural and religious event.

The programme aimed to raise awareness on responsible wastemanagement and the reduction of single-use plastics duringpublic gatherings. By introducing reusable bags directly to thecommunity, PGC encouraged more environmentally friendlypractices while fostering greater public participation in Penang’ssustainability initiatives.

The activation reflected the council’s commitment to bringingenvironmental education and awareness to diverse communitiesacross the state.

NSUP Distribution at KADUN N.16 Perai Chinese New Year Open House

As part of the Chinese New Year community celebration in Perai,PGC participated in the KADUN N.16 Perai Open House by distributingreusable NSUP bags to attendees throughout the evening event.​​

The festive gathering provided an opportunity to connectsustainability efforts with community engagement, reminding the publicthat environmental responsibility can be practised during celebrations andfestive occasions.​​

Through the activation, PGC continued to spread awareness onreducing plastic dependency while encouraging families and localresidents to adopt reusable alternatives in their daily shopping and lifestylehabits.

NSUP Outreach During Thaipusam Celebrations

In conjunction with the Thaipusam celebrations, PGC carried out atwo-day NSUP bag distribution programme at Jalan Kebun Bunga toengage with the large number of devotees, visitors, and volunteersattending the annual celebration.​

The outreach aimed to promote environmental responsibility duringmajor public events, where disposable plastics are often heavilyconsumed. By distributing reusable NSUP bags at strategic locations,including the MBPP and PDRM panthal area,PGC encouraged thepublic to make environmentally conscious choices even during festiveand cultural celebrations.​

The initiative also highlighted the importance of integratingsustainability into community traditions and large-scale gatherings.​

Launch of the Third Rebag Station at GAMA

Penang Green Council (PGC) further expanded the ReBag Stationinitiative with the launch of the third station at GAMA Supermarket &Departmental Store, strengthening efforts to encourage reusableshopping practices among the public.

Strategically located within a popular shopping destination in GeorgeTown, the ReBag Station provides shoppers with easy access to reusablebags through a simple sharing and donation concept. Visitors areencouraged to donate extra reusable bags or take one wheneverneeded, helping to reduce reliance on single-use plastic bags.

The continued expansion of ReBag Stations across Penang demonstratesgrowing community support for sustainable consumption practiceswhile reinforcing PGC’s commitment towards promoting wastereduction and a more circular lifestyle culture.

Launch of the Second Rebag Station at Design Village

Following the encouraging response received from the first ReBagStation at Gurney Plaza, Penang Green Council (PGC) expanded theinitiative with the launch of the second ReBag Station at DesignVillage Outlet Mall, Batu Kawan.

The initiative continues to promote the culture of sharing andreuse by providing a convenient platform for shoppers to donateextra reusable bags or take one whenever needed. Through thissimple community-driven concept, the ReBag Station helps reducedependency on single-use plastic bags while encouraging moresustainable shopping habits.

The expansion of the ReBag Station initiative reflects PGC’songoing commitment to making reusable practices moreaccessible across Penang, while fostering greater publicparticipation in waste reduction and circular economy efforts.

Chowrasta Market NSUP Bag Giveaway

29 December 2025 | 📍Chowrasta Market, Penang Island

To close the year on a greener note, PGC organised an NSUP bag giveaway session at Chowrasta Market, one of Penang Island’s busiest traditional markets. The activation targeted dailys hoppers and market-goers, encouraging them to begin adopting reusable bags as part of their everyday routine.

The lively market environment provided an ideal platform to engage directly with the public on the importance of reducing plastic waste, especially in high-consumption areas where single-use plastic bags are commonly used. The programme also served as a reminder that small changes in daily habits can collectively contribute towards a cleaner and more sustainable Penang.

ReBag Station Interactive Campaign: Snap, Tag & Redeem

28 November 2025 – 7 December 2025 | 📍 Gurney Plaza, Penang

Following the successful launch of Penang’s first ReBag Station atGurney Plaza, Penang Green Council (PGC) introduced the “Snap, Tag& Redeem” interactive campaign to further encourage publicparticipation in reusable bag sharing practices.

The campaign invited shoppers and visitors to engage with the ReBagStation by sharing photos on social media, helping to increaseawareness of the initiative and promote sustainable shopping habitsamong the wider community. Participants who joined the campaignwere able to redeem complimentary NSUP reusable bags, reinforcingthe message of reuse and waste reduction.

The positive public response, including active bag donations andcontinuous bag circulation, reflected growing community supporttowards reducing single-use plastic consumption and embracing aculture of reuse in Penang.

Launch of Penang’s First Rebag Station

Penang Green Council (PGC) launched the first Rebag Station inPenang at Gurney Plaza as part of the No Single-Use Plastics(NSUP) Campaign. Located beside the information counter, theinitiative encourages the public to donate and reuse cleanreusable bags and paper bags, helping to reduce unnecessaryplastic bag consumption.

The Rebag Station promotes a simple sharing concept whereshoppers can donate extra bags or take one when needed,creating a continuous cycle of reuse within the community.

Through this initiative, PGC aims to cultivate sustainableshopping habits, reduce waste generation, and encouragegreater public participation in Penang’s journey towards agreener and more circular economy.

Earth Fest 2025: Where Creativity Inspires Climate Action

3 – 5 October  2025 | 🕘 10.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m. | 📍 Hin Bus Depot

Earth Fest 2025 celebrated sustainability through a creative and educational approach that connected art, knowledge, and community participation. Held at Hin Bus Depot, the event invited the public to explore environmental awareness in an engaging, hands-on way.

A key highlight of the festival was the art installation, designed to simplify complex environmental issues into relatable visual stories. The installation demonstrated how creativity can make sustainability both accessible and memorable for all ages.

Complementing the display was an interactive sustainability quiz, which encouraged visitors to test their environmental knowledge. Participants who completed the quiz received upcycled gifts, turning learning into an enjoyable and meaningful experience while reinforcing the importance of reusability and waste reduction.

The event successfully bridged on-site engagement and digital outreach. On-site activities drew strong participation and conversations among visitors, while the event’s digital promotion extended its impact beyond the venue. 

These outcomes reflect how the combination of creative education and interactive engagement effectively strengthened public understanding of sustainability and built a deeper connection with Penang Green Council’s mission.

Earth Fest 2025 proved that meaningful change begins with awareness. This also reminds us that creativity remains one of the most powerful tools to inspire environmental action.

Kiehls’s Pop-up Event at Gurney Plaza

From 27 August 2025 to 7 September 2025, the Penang Green Council (PGC) participated as a supporting partner in Kiehl’s Mission Renewal Pop-Up: Love Our Planet, held at the Centre Atrium, Gurney Plaza.

This participation was in line with PGC’s efforts to mainstream the No Single-Use Plastic (NSUP) campaign message through education and public awareness on the importance of waste reduction and sustainable practices.

Through the NSUP team, PGC also distributed 250 NSUP reusable bags to visitors as a symbol of support for Kiehl’s green initiative and to encourage the community to adopt a low-carbon and eco-friendly lifestyle.

Reusable Hero Social Media Contest

On 15 August 2025, the Green Reusable Heroes Competition was organised specifically for Penang Green Office staff, aimed at encouraging them to showcase their commitment to reducing single-use plastic consumption through the creative use of reusable items such as cloth bags, water bottles, and food containers.

10 Participants submitted a photo along with a 50-word story related to their Reusable Hero at their workplace. Entries were evaluated based on creativity, positive messaging, and the ability to inspire others.

Distribution of Free NSUP Cloth Bags

On 18 July 2025, the Penang Green Council (PGC) distributed 200 NSUP bags to the offices of the Penang State Government EXCO members, immediately after the EXCO meeting at KOMTAR, as a symbol of support for the state administration’s single-use plastic reduction policy.

The programme continued with public distribution at key locations as follows:

Collaboration with Strategic Partner (Penang Hill Festival)

As a supporting partner of the Penang Hill Festival 2025, the Penang Green Council (PGC) conducted a roadshow on 20 July 2025 as part of the festival’s programme.

The roadshow delivered the #PilihlahReusable campaign message and supported local authorities’ initiatives to reduce single-use plastic consumption through educational and engagement approaches with visitors.

The main activity was a silkscreen printing session on recycled bags (2nd-life bags) featuring a special No Single-Use Plastic (NSUP) design, serving as an interactive medium to encourage visitors to practise reuse in their daily lives.

Call To Action’ Social Media Activities – Interesting Facts & ‘Call to Action’

This initiative is a strategic effort aimed at encouraging Penang residents to take immediate action and corrective measures towards reducing single-use plastic consumption, in line with the objectives of the No Single-Use Plastic (NSUP) campaign.

PGC delivered the NSUP message through the creation of interactive social media content, including a carousel post series highlighting plastic pollution issues as well as the challenges of the Pulau Burung landfill, which is projected to reach its maximum capacity by 2035.

To enhance reach and effectiveness, these posts were further strengthened through paid promotions (ads boost) to expand their visibility among target audiences.

The posts were published biweekly, on 19 July 2025 and 2 August 2025, focusing on delivering interesting facts, raising awareness of the current situation, and encouraging action through calls such as bringing your own bags, avoiding single-use plastics, and supporting the state’s green policies.

World Environment Day (WED) 2025 - Fuyoh! Let’s Step Up 3KM Fun Walk

Every year, the Penang Green Council (PGC) celebrates World Environment Day (WED) as a reminder to all levels of society of the need to live sustainably and in harmony with the environment through their daily activities.

Once again hosted by the Republic of Korea, World Environment Day 2025 in Jeju Island will focus on raising awareness of plastic pollution and uniting all sectors (government, businesses, and civil society) in addressing this critical issue under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution”, which is aligned with Penang’s objectives.

The event began with a Zumba session and was followed by the flag-off of participants by YB Dato’ Seri Sundarajoo Somu, EXCO for Housing and Environment.

The open participation attracted people from various walks of life, demonstrating support for healthy and sustainable lifestyles.

Participants were encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles and bags as a symbolic gesture of reducing single-use plastic consumption at public events.

This programme formed part of the ongoing initiative to cultivate a culture of sustainability among the people of Penang.

Premiere Screening of the Film WASTED by Eco-Business

A film that reveals the realities of the global waste issue. This film is a call to shift perspectives on the reality of our planet filled with food and plastic waste.

The film seeks to bridge existing gaps, highlight solutions, and connect people, businesses, and policymakers with new actions for the future.

The screening was also followed by a panel discussion featuring the following panellists:

Design and Distribution of Free Cloth Bags

A total of 100,000 cloth bags were distributed statewide in phases during the ‘educational enforcement’ period. After that, the bags will be made widely available for sale to the public.

PGC hopes to collaborate with local Penang artists to design unique bags.

Distribution of the Official Campaign Poster

A total of 10,000 copies of the official campaign poster in four languages (English, Malay, Chinese, and Tamil) were distributed to 8 main business premises by both local authorities from March to April.

These premises displayed the official posters and committed to reducing the use of single-use plastics at their outlets.

Onboard Laboratory Tour of Plastic Odyssey – “Clean the Past, Build the Future”

19 & 20 February 2025 | 🕘 10.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m.

In conjunction with the stopover of the Plastic Odyssey vessel in Penang, the Penang Green Council (PGC) was given the opportunity to bring a total of 210 primary and secondary school students, together with accompanying teachers and local business representatives, on board the ship.

The tour provided direct exposure to the technologies and innovative efforts implemented by Plastic Odyssey in addressing plastic pollution at the global level. Through laboratory visits and briefings conducted by the ship’s crew, participants gained deeper insights into plastic recycling processes, research on alternative materials, and environmental restoration strategies that can be applied at the community level.

This programme is hoped to inspire the younger generation and industry players to take an active role in building a more sustainable future.

Press Conference on the No Plastic Bag Every Day Penang Campaign (In conjunction with the stopover of Plastic Odyssey in Penang)

14 February 2025 | 🕘 9.00 a.m. – 12.00 p.m.

This campaign was carried out as part of the Penang State Government’s ongoing efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags, held in conjunction with the stopover of the Plastic Odyssey vessel in Penang. The programme brought together a total of 75 participants, including representatives from the State Government, L’Occitane, Plastic Odyssey, invited guests, and members of the media.

The implementation of this campaign aimed to raise public awareness on the issue of plastic pollution while fostering strategic collaboration between government agencies, the private sector, and international organisations to strengthen sustainability initiatives in the state.
